Four Byo reps at Miss Curvy

FOUR curvaceous women from Bulawayo have been selected to represent the city at this year’s Miss Curvy Zimbabwe modelling contest slated for the resort town of Kariba next month. The four beauties will take to the ramp on August 9 at the Moth Camp in Kariba together with 16 other contestants from different parts of the country.

Organiser of the event and ZimGossip Models director, Mercy “Catwalk” Mushaninga, said the contest had been dubbed “Supporting Domestic Tourism through Beauty Pageants” as it would be used to market tourism treasures found in the country.

She said about 50 women ranging from the age of 18 to 26 had so far registered to take part in the event.

“For now, we have 50 people who have registered to compete. Harare has 38, Bulawayo four, Gweru and Kariba two each and one from Bindura. Three more ladies based in Germany and South Africa will be flying in for the event,” she said.

Mushaninga said the 50 ladies would be trimmed down to 20 at auditions to be held in Harare next month.

She, however, said the four ladies from Bulawayo had safely secured spots at the finale as they would not be part of those who would be trimmed.

“We will have another audition where the girls will be trimmed to the final 20 who will take it to the ramp come August 9. Some of them had big stomachs and we told them to work on them in order to secure places for the finals”.

Thereafter, the selected 20 will go for a weeklong boot camp at a private venue in Kariba from August 4 to 12.

A number of activities including boat cruises, game viewing and workshops with the ministries of Tourism and Environment have been lined up for the ladies boot camp.

Mushaninga, who is well known in Harare for hosting successful bush parties, has also lined up a bush-braai pre-party for the finalists.

Entertainment will be provided by Roki, Judgment Yard and BaShupi among other artistes.

Asked why the pageant had been moved from the traditional venues in Harare, Mushaninga said they chose Kariba as it goes along with the contest’s theme.

The lady who will be crowned Miss Curvy Zimbabwe will go on to represent the country at the Diamond Queen of Africa contest taking place in Namibia in November.

Last year, the event, which was also founded by Mushaninga, was held in Zimbabwe. Chiedza Gwanda was crowned queen.

The inaugural Miss Curvy Zimbabwe contest held in 2011 was won by Tanya Chikuni followed by Mildred Shumba who was crowned in 2012. The pageant was not held last year.  As part of her prizes, the queen will receive cash and hopefully a car as the organisers are luring sponsors to sponsor a vehicle for the queen.

Miss Curvy Zimbabwe was launched in 2011 to appreciate the diverse beauty found in the African woman. Mushaninga launched the event after realising that there were a lot of curvaceous women in the country who were interested in modelling but could not do so as there were no pageants for them.
