FOUR robbers, who targeted motorists while pretending to be genuine passengers along highways, have been jailed for 31 years each.

Peter Mabasa Tsaramunda (32), Ernest Mashingaidze (28), Albert Kagwa (26) and Willard Fulumula (28) were all from Whitecliff, Zvimba District.

In a statement, Criminal Investigations Department (CID) spokesperson Detective Inspector Rachel Muteweri said on August 9 2025, at around 1am, the complainant, a driver employed by a renowned courier company, was in transit from Bulawayo to Harare.

“Upon reaching Kadoma, he picked the four who posed as legitimate commuters,” said Detective Inspector Muteweri.

“While en route, the accused persons pounced on the complainant, his assistant and another passenger.

“They were joined by Willard Fulumula, who was waylaying by the roadside. The quartet took control of the vehicle before driving to a secluded place where they robbed the three victims.

“They transferred their loot into their getaway car, a Toyota Harrier and drove off, leaving the victims stranded in the bush. The victims managed to make way to the nearest police station, where they filed a police report.”

Police investigations led to the arrest of Peter Mabasa Tsaramunda, who implicated his three accomplices, Ernest Mashingaidze, Albert Kagwa and Willard Fulumula.

Follow-ups were made, leading to their subsequent arrest, the recovery of the stolen property and the getaway car.

Among the stolen property were some cellphones, a laptop and a tablet. The police have since discouraged the motoring public from offering lifts to strangers to avoid falling prey to criminals.
