Four suspected armed robbers have been arrested in connection with a daring raid on a Shamva Gold Mine in which security guards were confronted and one of them allegedly disarmed of his service firearm.
Two employees of the mining syndicate are also among the suspects after police established that they allegedly supplied information on the mine’s security arrangements, facilitating the September 30 robbery.
The suspects are Oliver Jere (23), Livison Jairosi (29), Obrian Junior Admire Kumbula (28) and Abraham Musvosvere (48).
Criminal Investigations Department spokesperson Detective Inspector Rachel Muteweri confirmed the arrests, saying police were still pursuing four other suspected accomplices.
The four at large are Misheck Jere, Rangarirai Jere, Calvin Muzenda and Trinix Manjengwa.
According to Insp Muteweri, the suspects travelled to the mine in a Mitsubishi sedan, registration number AHR 9320, arriving at around 1:30am on September 30.
“Upon arrival at the mine, the suspects confronted security guards who were on duty before disarming one of the guards of his service firearm.
“They ransacked the premises before getting away with gold trapping mats. A police report was filed and a manhunt for the accused persons ensued,” she said.
Police subsequently arrested Jere and Jairosi in Harare and recovered the vehicle allegedly used in the robbery.
The two led investigators to Kumbula and Musvosvere, who were employees of the mining syndicate.
The arrests also resulted in the recovery of the stolen firearm from a slime dam.
Further investigations allegedly established that Kumbula and Musvosvere had supplied the robbers with information about the mine’s security arrangements, enabling them to carry out the robbery.
The four suspects appeared before the Bindura Regional Magistrates’ Court and were remanded for routine remand.
