THREE-armed robbers and their accomplice, an employee at Pickstone Peerless Mine in Chegutu, were arrested on Monday evening after alert security guards thwarted their plan to rob the mine.

The suspects are in police custody awaiting their court appearance.

Four other suspects, who are believed to be armed, are still at large.

Pickstone Peerless Mine general manager, Mr Alfred Madowe said the robbers were arrested at the mine although they were targeting the boiler plant which is located about 15 kilometres from the site.

Allied Security commanding officer, Sergeant Trevor Mthimkhulu whose company was contracted to provide security at the mine said their officers managed to apprehend the three after they had entered the mine unlawfully.

He said their officers searched the three and found machetes and a map of the mine.

During interrogation, the three then implicated one Vimbai Manjeya, the mine’s worker.

Manjeya allegedly admitted that she was part of the plan to rob the mine.

The other four suspects who had remained outside in a getaway vehicle sped off when warning shots were fired.
