The annual “Dr Gasolo Long Walk to Success” is gaining momentum as preparations for its fourth edition reach advanced stages. The initiative, which champions mental health awareness and amplifies the voices of artistes across the country, will take place from September 18 to 20.

The walkathon will cover 250kms over three days. The journey will begin on September 18 in Dr Gasolo’s rural home of Matshetsheni, Matabeleland South, and proceed to Gwanda Town for the first stop. On day two, the march continues from Gwanda to Esigodini, before concluding in Bulawayo on the third day.

Event organiser Desmond Ntini said preparations are progressing well, with increased support from stakeholders and well-wishers.
“Plans for the walkathon are on track. We’ve scheduled a meeting with the Matabeleland South Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, who has shown great interest in the event. This demonstrates the growing recognition of the walk’s significance,” Ntini said.

To ensure Dr Gasolo is in peak condition for the gruelling trek, a wellness company has pledged to provide massage and body therapy. A sportswear brand has also come on board to supply quality sneakers, a welcome development after Dr Gasolo famously completed last year’s walk with worn-out shoes.

Beyond the physical challenge, the walkathon has sparked meaningful conversations within the arts sector, particularly around mental health, an area long shrouded in stigma.
“This initiative has opened doors for dialogue on once-taboo issues. At least two artistes who were struggling with depression have reached out to us after last year’s campaign and are now receiving treatment. That’s the impact we envisioned,” Ntini said.

The walk has also attracted partnerships with stakeholders who previously overlooked the arts, creating new opportunities for collaboration and engagement.
“Line ministries that used to keep the arts sector at arm’s length are now engaging with us. This is a big step towards building sustainable support for the creative industry,” he added. – Follow on X: @mthabisi_mthire
