Edmore Siwela was arrested on Wednesday following a trap set by detectives in Mutare. Yesterday he was still in police custody and assisting with investigations.
It is alleged that sometime last week, Siwela placed an advertisement in a supermarket in Mutare. He pretended to be a director of World Security Company with branches in Harare and Bulawayo. He invited interested applicants to come to an open space at the intersection of Herbert Chitepo Street and 10th Avenue in Mutare.
According to police, “58 people responded to the advert and went to the open space where Siwela later chose one of them to collect US$10 from each of the applicants as fingerprint vetting fee”. The man then handed over US$580 to Siwela who then alleged that he was going to Harare to collect uniforms but disappeared. A report was then made to police who pretended to be job seekers and phoned Siwela.
He responded to the phone call and travelled to Mutare where a trap was set, leading to his arrest. He is expected to appear in court soon facing 58 counts of fraud. – CR.
