Blood and blood products should be supplied free of charge to pregnant women for the country to reduce the number of women dying while giving birth,” Health and Child Care Minister Dr David Parirenyatwa has said.Speaking ahead of Africa Society for Blood Transfusion Congress (AfSBT) scheduled for Victoria Falls in July this year, Dr Parirenyatwa appealed to the donor community to assist in making blood accessible to all expectant women.

“There is nothing for free, someone, somewhere should be paying.  But what we want is free blood for all pregnant women if we are to reduce the current figures of 525 women per 1000 who die during child birth,” Dr Parirenyatwa said. In relation to the AfSBT and the world blood donor day slatted for June 14, Dr Parirenyatwa said Government fully supported both events as they brought activities of the NBSZ on the spotlight.
