SALIF KEITA’S fond memories of the late Oliver “Tuku” Mtukudzi come as Zimbabwe celebrates the legendary musician’s birthday month, with the Malian icon recalling his meeting with the late superstar and Zimbabwean Afro-fusion outfit Mookomba.
Keita, 77, who is in Harare ahead of the Ecobank Legends Night at Alex Park Sports Club tonight, made the revelations in an exclusive interview with the Zimpapers Entertainment Hub.
“I came to Zimbabwe in 2015 for HIFA and I met Oliver Mtukudzi. I remember him very well. I also remember Mookomba. They were doing very well and I still remember them,” said Keita.
The Malian music legend, whose career spans more than five decades, also reflected on his illustrious career and shared his views on the changing global music landscape.
Keita praised Intotal Band and Ecobank for bringing him back to Zimbabwe, saying he had been following the young musicians’ work through social media.
“I have been seeing what these young boys are doing musically. I have been following their work through social media, and I am happy to be invited by Intotal Band and Ecobank,” he said.
Keita is set to headline the concert alongside Yondo Sister and local acts in what organisers say will be a celebration of musical legends.
