A United States based team of surgeons, anaesthetists and nurses, in conjunction with local doctors, are set to perform free cleft lip and palate screening and surgeries at Harare Central Hospital next month.

The visit by the foreign medical team, Leap Global, is being facilitated by local medical practitioners under the banner Celebration Health.

Celebration Health director Dr Freeblessing Murahwa said the surgeries would be conducted early next month.

He said: “For the 11th time, Leap Global is bringing USA based surgeons and nurses that will work hand in glove with local doctors to perform free cleft lip and palate surgeries at Harare Children’s Hospital.

“The USA based team of doctors are expected to arrive between  6 and 7 September.

“The screening sessions will be done on 8 September and surgeries between 9 and 13 September.”

Dr Murahwa said they were targeting more than 100 patients to undergo the corrective surgeries.

Under the initiative, more than 450 children have received free cleft lip and palate operations over the last 10 years at the medical institution.
