A two-week dental outreach programme has brought free oral healthcare to underserved communities in Matabeleland North following a partnership between Smilestar, a UK-based dental charity and Cimas Health Group.
Founder of Smilestar Dr Mitesh Badiani said the collaboration enabled the team to provide high-quality dental care.
“Cimas Health Group’s support including a fully equipped mobile clinic significantly enhanced our ability to deliver quality care with more treatment options,” he said.
The outreach, which ran from March 10 to 20, started at Chinotimba Medical Centre in Victoria Falls before moving to Hwange Miombo Safari Camp in Dete.
Local doctor Alan Gura alongside Smilestar volunteers performed restorative work, periodontal treatments and simple root fillings—all at no cost to patients.
Cimas Health Group chief executive officer Mr Vuli Ndlovu said the initiative was important in improving healthcare access.
“We believe oral health is a fundamental right,” he said.
“Partnering with Smilestar and providing our mobile clinic for free is a testament to our commitment to reaching underserved areas.”
Dr Badiani said poor oral hygiene and limited affordability are key concerns. He said there is need for schools to incorporate oral health education into their curricula.
Looking ahead, Smilestar hopes to expand its outreach but requires additional support.
“We would love to reach more regions, but we need partners to assist with accommodation, food and transport,” Dr Badiani said.
Meanwhile, Cimas Health Group officials will join the Ministry of Health and Childcare today for World Oral Health Day commemorations at Kusile Government Primary School in Lupane.
