ABOUT 6 500 people were screened for cataracts at a four-day free eye clinic conducted by specialists from Al Basar International Foundation of Saudi Arabia in Bulawayo last week.

Islamic Medical Association of Zimbabwe (IMAZ) chairman Dr Cherifa Sururu said the turnout of people with various eyesight problems ranging from glaucoma, retina and pterygium was overwhelming. He said about 6 500 people were screened for cataracts and received medication while 440 were operated on with a total of 1 200 reading glasses being parcelled out.

A new international recognised procedure, phacoemulsification was used and no complications were recorded. The surgery, when undertaken locally costs about $2 500.  IMAZ facilitated the visit and catered for the team of 16 of the Saudi Arabian organisation’s eye specialists. Dr Sururu said the organisation made arrangements to return for another free eye camp early next year. — Sunday News Reporter
