Free Stars lift Geozing trophy

They lifted the Geozing Pawnbrokers floating trophy when they beat five other teams in a competition held at Raylton Sports Club.

ZimPost, Khami, Sparrows, ZRP, Zesa and winners of the day Free Stars are the six teams which battled it out for the floating trophy as well as monetary prizes that were on offer.

The six teams competed in a round robin format.

From the first whistle Free Stars put up a spirited performance and won all the five games that they played. They beat ZRP and Sparrows 17-12, ZimPost 22-4, Zesa 13-8 and Khami 20-6.

They topped the log with 15 points after scoring 89 goals.

Sparrows were second with nine points after three wins.

Felisitus Kangwa from Free Stars was awarded the overall outstanding player of the day and walked away with $30 and a certificate.

Other outstanding players who were rewarded with certificates for their performance were Tracy Ndlovu from Sparrows who won the best goalshooter while Lorraine Manyoro from Free Stars walked away with the best goal attacker’s prize.

Zesa’s Shylet Chikumbirike and Naomi Phiri won the best goal defender and goalkeeper of the day respectively.

The wing defender who outshone all was Blessing Fambai from ZRP while Khami’s Methembeni Sibanda was awarded for being the best centre with Thandekile Ncube from ZimPost being the best wing attacker.

For their sweat, Free Stars walked away with a Geozing and Pawnbrokers floating trophy, a kit and gift hampers for each of the 12 players.

Sparrows, Zesa and Khami received 12 individual gift hampers for finishing second third and fourth respectively while balls were given to ZRP and ZimPost who were position five and six respectively.

The outstanding players were awarded certificates and $20 each.

George Jiji, the Geozing and Pawnbrokers consulting manager who was representing the sponsors said soccer was a big brand today because someone stood up and invested in the sport.

He challenged other members of the corporate sector to come together so as to make netball one of the crowd pulling sports in the city and the country as a whole.

Morgan Donga for the organisers said he was happy because the tournament was a huge success despite the short notice.

Zimbabwe Netball Association (Zina) Bulawayo provincial chairperson Ruth Hove said the partnership with the Geozing Pawnbrokers came at the most appropriate time when the city was preparing to host the Zimbabwe National Youth Games next year.
