A TRUE son of the soil has taken his final bow.
Liberation struggle war icon Elias Sikholiwe Njani Moyo, who faced a life sentence under the brutal Rhodesian regime for daring to help freedom fighters, has died at the age of 100.
Moyo, who spent his life fighting for Zimbabwe’s liberation and later empowering communities through business, passed away on Saturday morning at Mater Dei Hospital in Bulawayo after a long illness.

“Mr Moyo’s life was a symbol of sacrifice, resilience, and undying love for Zimbabwe. His legacy will live on,” said family spokesperson and great grandson Mkhululi Chimoio.
Moyo’s incredible story reads like a chapter out of a war novel:
• In 1976, as a 50-year-old ZAPU branch treasurer, he was slapped with a life sentence for offering food and shelter to freedom fighters.
• Rhodesian propaganda blasted him, running stories titled “This man lost all – through helping the terrorists,” trying to scare others from supporting the liberation movement.
• But Moyo never bowed. His spirit stayed unbroken, and he was eventually pardoned after Zimbabwe’s independence.
Beyond the battlefield, Moyo became a pillar in Mawabeni’s business community, using his resources to uplift others and build a better future for the generations that followed.
Moyo leaves behind his wife, a proud lineage of children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren — a living testimony to his strength, sacrifice, and hope.
Zimbabwe salutes a warrior who gave everything… and lived to see freedom reign!
HE DIED FREE, 100 YEARS STRONG!
