FORMER freedom fighter Cde Malani Moyo has died. He was 64.
His uncle and family spokesperson, Mr Njinga Moyo on Friday said Cde Moyo died on Tuesday last week at United Bulawayo Hospitals (UBH). He had been ill for sometime.
“My nephew, Cde Moyo, was a dedicated man who worked hard for the betterment of everyone in the family, the village and the country as a whole. He was a helpful person,” said Mr Moyo.
War veterans provincial administrator for Bulawayo Cde Bornfas Ndlovu said the body of Cde Moyo whose pseudo name was Mkhokheli Msarurwa left Bulawayo yesterday afternoon for burial at his rural home in Tsholotsho.
A funeral service was held at 2pm at First Funeral parlour in the city before the body was taken to his rural home.
“The burial will take place tomorrow at Sedgwick Village in Tsholotsho. The church service will start at 9.10 am at his homestead and then people will proceed to the burial place,” said Cde Ndlovu.
Cde Moyo was born on 20 June in 1948 at Nhlanganiso area in Tsholotsho and did his primary education at Zuzumba School.
In 1969 he went to South Africa where he worked for six years.
He joined the liberation struggle in 1977 and went to Botswana where his first port of call was Francistown Refugee Camp.
Cde Moyo was flown to Zambia with other cadres where they stayed at Nampundwe Camp.
In 1978 Cde Moyo went on to do his military training at Mboma Training Camp in Angola.
After training he returned to Zambia where he was deployed at the camps until the cease fire.
After Independence, Cde Moyo joined the Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) and retired in 1994.
He is survived by a wife, seven children and eight grandchildren.
