Freeland wins Eagles club race

Clive Midlane crossed the finishing line nine seconds behind Freeland with Cornelius Member coming home third in one hour 49 minutes 22 seconds.
Tracy Lee Meth was the only woman who participated in the race and came home in a time of two hours three minutes 59 seconds.
Freeland, second runner-up in last year’s Tour de Falcon, said it was a competitive race and applauded organisers for arranging the event.
“I must say this was a very tough race and we had to push hard especially on our way back. This was our first race of the year and you could tell that most of the guys were not that fit.
“I believe we should have more of these races so that the guys are always ready for out-of-Bulawayo competitions,” said Freeland. Some racers had a false start due to poor communication.
Ekhaya Racing Club’s racers led by Nkulumo Dube and Eben Manaba were some of the affected participants as they left before other racers arrived at the starting point.
“I was disappointed because I could have won this race. I practised hard for this race and when we got to the starting point someone spread word that the race had been cancelled so we thought of going it alone with the guys.
“When we were approaching the tollgate after Danger, we received communication that some people had assembled at the starting point and had to return. We met them at Chipangali but unfortunately we did not start with them and our times were not recognised. Nonetheless, it was a good race,” said Dube who represented Zimbabwe at last year’s All-Africa Games in Maputo.
Meanwhile, cyclists over 30 years old will represent Bulawayo at the Masters Competition in Harare next month.
