when the two neighbours clash in the final round of the All-Africa Games qualifier on Saturday.
Phiri was away in South Africa on a spying mission during Amaglug-glug’s Olympic Games qualifier against Benin over the weekend.
The South Africans beat Benin 5-1 in that game but Phiri yesterday said that he was unfazed and instead vowed to down Amaglug-glug in their backyard.
Phiri arrived yesterday morning from his trip and conducted the afternoon session with the Young Warriors alongside his assistant Darlington Dodo.
“We are not reading much into their type of play. Instead we are going there to come back with a positive result.
“We can match them in every department and I believe we have the strength to beat them at their home turf.
“We need to work as a team and utilise all our chances as there is little room for mistakes at this stage,” said Phiri.
The Young Warriors gaffer, however, acknowledged that the South Africans were not easy prey and were a competitive side.
” South Africa is a good side and they have proved to be a high-scoring team especially at home because they beat Malawi 4-1 and Benin 5-1 and we need to defuse that.
“We need to be solid because they send everyone forward when they are attacking.
“We will need to work with our defence, which has conceded some silly goals in our last few games, and I’m sure we will be able to compete with them,” added Phiri.
The final squad of 18 will be released today after the morning training session.
The team is expected to leave for South Africa tomorrow morning and they are hoping to conduct their first training session soon after the arrival in Johannesburg.
Phiri’s men, who can count on huge support from Zimbabweans based in South Africa, have been in fantastic form having beaten the Zambia Under-23 side 4-3 on aggregate before edging Botswana 6-3 on aggregate as well.
But they now face their final hurdle in South Africa’s Amaglug-glug in what promises to be a bruising encounter scheduled for Saturday at Sinaba Stadium in Johannesburg.
Winners will grab a ticket to the All-Africa Games to be held in Mozambique from September 3-18.
