AN iconic photograph showing a baby Lamine Yamal being held by football legend Lionel Messi during a UNICEF fundraising photoshoot more than 18 years ago has resurfaced, capturing the imagination of football fans around the world.

The images, which have circulated widely on social media, show Messi meeting Yamal and his mother, Sheila, during a charity photoshoot organised by UNICEF long before either could have imagined the remarkable journeys that lay ahead.

What was once a memorable fundraising event has since become a symbolic passing of the torch, with both Messi and Lamine Yamal now recognised among the world’s most influential footballers.

UNICEF said the photographs are genuine and reflect a shared commitment that extends beyond football.

“Yes, those photos you’ve seen are real. More than 18 years ago, a baby named Lamine Yamal and his mom Sheila met Lionel Messi at a UNICEF fundraising photoshoot.

“Today, their achievements on the pitch inspire millions. Off the pitch, both Messi and Lamine Yamal use their voices and platforms as UNICEF Goodwill Ambassadors to support and advocate for children around the world.

“The goal? That every child survives, thrives, and fulfils their potential. We are proud to have them on our team,” the organisation said.

Beyond their football success, both ambassadors have used their global profiles to champion children’s rights, education, health and protection, helping to raise awareness and support for UNICEF’s humanitarian programmes worldwide.

The resurfaced images have drawn widespread admiration from football supporters, with many describing them as one of the sport’s most remarkable full-circle moments, linking one generation’s icon with another through a shared commitment to improving the lives of children.
