Rising musician Omega Ndlovu, popularly known as “Mkhosi” has made a striking shift from his Maskandi roots to embrace the vibrant world of Afro-Pop.
His latest album, “Isiphiwo”, released last week, reflects this new musical exploration.
Mkhosi, who initially started his musical journey in the Maskandi genre, has set his sights on making a splash in the Afro-Pop scene. In the title track of the album, “Isiphiwo”, Mkhosi features the talented Dr Gosolo.
Explaining his decision to delve into Afro-Pop, Mkhosi shared with Chronicle Showbiz: “I have found a new route in my music and decided to go for the Afro-Pop sound. I’ve long been doing Maskandi, and I asked myself why not give it a try in Afro-Pop.”
The seven-track album is already gaining traction on social media and is poised to climb local radio station charts. Some notable tracks from the compilation include “Bengikuthanda”, “Bayangibiza”, “Umntanami”, “Akutholakali Lula”, “Siyabonana” and “Ababili.”
Reflecting on his musical journey, Mkhosi revealed that his passion for music began during his formative years in church. He officially ventured into a music career in 2013 when he moved to South Africa, collaborating with other musicians to release an album under the group name “Izothamlilo”.
His solo career kicked off in 2014 with the release of “Isheleni Lami”, a Maskandi album that performed well in the market and established him as a noteworthy figure in the genre. Despite challenges, he returned to Zimbabwe in 2016, facing misconceptions about Maskandi music.
“I give thanks to Jeys Marabini who welcomed and gave me a platform to grow,” said Mkhosi.
He gained recognition in 2017 with a nomination in the best Maskandi/Mbaqanga Song category at the inaugural Skyz Metro FM Music Awards for his hit song “Zagobhoza”.
In his musical evolution, Mkhosi continued to make an impact with albums like “Kwangenza Ukufa” (2015) and “Uyob’unenhlanhla” (2018). Now, with “Isiphiwo”, he ventures into Afro-Pop, showcasing his versatility and commitment to exploring diverse musical landscapes.
