IT’S a thrilling tale of redemption and resilience for Elton Sibanda who has emerged as the shining star for Sheasham Football Club.

From a humble beginning as the third-choice goalkeeper, he has soared to claim the prestigious number one jersey, impressing managers and fans alike with his outstanding performances.

Sibanda’s journey to the top was not an easy one. Joining from the relegated Bulawayo City, he had to bide his time, patiently waiting for his chance to shine. And when that opportunity finally came, he grabbed it with both hands, leaving a lasting impression on his coaches.

The turning point came during his debut against formidable opponents, Simba Bhora, where he showcased his shot-stopping brilliance, securing a crucial 1-1 draw at Mandava stadium. Stepping ahead of the veteran keeper, Liberty Chirava, Sibanda demonstrated immense potential and determination, earning the trust of his coaches.

As the season unfolded, Sheasham faced challenges, struggling to find consistent results. But Sibanda’s introduction breathed new life into the team’s defence. He delivered a commanding performance in a 2-1 victory against Cranborne Bullets, proving his worth even in challenging situations.

The defining moment of Sibanda’s rise came in a tough encounter against Highlanders, where he kept a clean sheet in a hard-fought 0-0 draw at Bata Stadium. From that moment on, he never looked back. The young goalkeeper displayed remarkable consistency, earning an impressive seven clean sheets in just ten matches.

“For me, it was all about using the opportunity when I get it. I knew that it was not going to be easy coming into a team with so many experienced goalkeepers, but I always believed in myself,” Sibanda said.

With unyielding determination, Sibanda faced another formidable test against the in-form side, Ngezi Platinum. He held his ground, keeping a clean sheet against the league’s second-positioned team, displaying nerves of steel and confidence that belied his years.

“I went into the match knowing that is was not going to be an easy affair. Ngezi are much more dangerous because they are a chasing team, team in the league can ever have it easy against them. I went to the match with that in mind but I also knew that it was a good opportunity for me to have a good and memorable performance”.

But Sibanda remained humble throughout his remarkable journey, acknowledging the team’s collective effort in his success. From defenders holding the fort to midfielders and attackers pressing forward, every player played a vital role in their defensive solidarity.

“It is a collective effort, defenders have also been doing their work in trying to make sure that we keep the back door shut. The midfielders and attackers also do their jobs which eventually ensures that it becomes easier for us at the back, therefore it is a team effort,” he said.

The transformation in Sheasham’s fortunes since Sibanda’s arrival has been nothing short of astounding. Under his steadfast presence in the goal, the team has lost just once in ten matches.

Compared to the initial first-choice goalkeeper’s struggles, Sibanda has proved to be a game-changer, conceding only four goals in those matches.

As he prepares to face Chicken Inn at Luveve Stadium today, Sibanda is brimming with confidence. The journey from lesser-known clubs like Bantu Rovers, Indlovu Iyanyathela, Talen Vision, and Bulawayo City has moulded him into a formidable shot-stopper, hungry for more success.
