In most farming areas most women usually survive on selling fresh farm products. This was one of the trades that Blessing Makayi specialised in when she was living in Raffingora before venturing into full-time music.
The musician who is now based in Chegutu said she financed her first album with money she got from vending. “I was a vendor and with the passion I had for music I just decided to use the money I got to release my debut album,” she said.
Initially Makayi, who calls herself Sister B, lacked confidence and could not perform on stage until a music manager realised her talent.
“Francis Motsi who was Tryson Chimbetu’s manager coincidentally got my album and he called me to perform with them in Mutorashanga.”
On that day she performed but could not stand stage fright.
“I spent some minutes trying to get rid of the stage fright but it was difficult. As time went on, I adjusted and delivered the performance,” she said. Last Saturday she performed at a road show in Chegutu leaving entertainment-starved.
Her music is purely Afro-fusion with song “Murume Wangu” being the crowd’s favorite.
“I am still to take my music to radio because I was hesitant but the people here in Chegutu gave me the courage to do so. “They have received the music very well. I did not expect such a reception,” she said.
She has been performing at live events in the small town and she is slowly gaining confidence in her work. “The people say my music is good and whenever I perform people call for a replay of the song ‘Katsime Kerudo’,” she said.
Her debut album “Manyemwe” which is still to make an impact on the market has songs “Tambai Ngoma”, “Murume Wangu”, “Wangu”, “Mutambarakede”, “Ndini Zingizi” and the title track
She is looking forward to have collaboration with Oliver Mtukudzi.
Sister B was born 32 years ago in Raffingora.
