REGISTRATION for athletes wishing to participate in the inaugural Liquor Hub 10KM Fun Run and 5KM Charity Walk to be held in the city on November 29 has started.

The event is being sponsored by Bulawayo businessman Raj Modi and the Bulawayo Athletics Board (BAB) is confident the race, which is their last event this year, will attract top-notch athletes.

Dailes Bingadadi, the BAB secretary-general, said registration fees for the event are pegged at $5 for seniors and $3 for juniors and thanked Modi for his continued partnership with BAB and urged athletes to register in their numbers.

“This is a new race and we expect athletes from Bulawayo to participate and make it exciting. We’re aware that some were saying they were reserving their energy for the Choppies race, but this Liquor Hub 10KM Fun Run and 5KM Charity Walk might be our last event of the year considering the time factor,” said Bingadadi.

“We haven’t heard anything from Choppies, hence our declaration that this is our end of year event. We encourage athletes to register on time to avoid last minute hustles because we expect all the country’s top runners to participate,” he said.

Modi is bankrolling the event to the tune of $10,000.

The top three in the senior men and women’s events will each get $500, $300 and $200.

The junior men and women’s first prize is $150, with the runners-up getting $100 while third placed athletes will walk away with $50.

Wheelchair race winners in both the men and women’s categories will get $200 and runners-up $150.

The race will start at Liquor Hub, situated along Fife Street, between 4th and 5th Avenues.

“We’re working on the course but what’s certain is that the race will start and finish at Liquor Hub,” said Bingadadi.

Liquor Hub is a wholesale centre owned by Modi and the philanthropist intends to make the race an annual event.

The Bulawayo businessman was the sponsor of the Spar Nkulumane 10KM Fun Run for over a decade before Choppies took over the race last year.
