Fungisai CD auctioned for US$200

General Paradzai Zimondi and an unidentified man bought the discs at US$200 while Zimbabwe Tourism Authority boss Karikoga Kaseke and an unidentified woman bought the discs at US$150.
Nyaradzo Group pledged to buy 50 CDs at US$10 each.

However, it was Alick Macheso, the sungura maestro, who drew laughter from the gallery after refusing to buy the CD.

“Ndinozivana naStan weku Gramma (Records)  achandipa mahara,” said Macheso.
Minister of Media, Information and Publicity Webster Shamu praised Fungisai for using the traditional mbira instrument on her latest album.

However, a section of Christians regard the mbira as a pagan instrument because it is mainly used in traditional rituals.

Fungisai, who is a qualified mbira player after enrolling at Zimbabwe College of Music, used the instrument in the song “Kwedu” off her latest album “Wenyasha Ndewenyasha”.

Minister Shamu said Fungisai’s use of mbira showed her passion to preserve the African culture.
“For a gospel artiste, especially a female one, to use mbira is amazing. This shows that Fungisai wants to keep the African and especially Zimbabwean legacy alive,” said Minister Shamu.

Fungisai also performed the song “Kwedu”, exhibiting her mbira playing skills.
The album launch was characterised by glamour, pomp and fanfare as people celebrated the work of an accomplished musician.

People from all walks of life including the army’s top brass and fellow musicians gathered at Garwe Restaurant for the occasion.

The first song on the album focuses on domestic tourism.
“The song creates awareness for local tourists that it is not only international tourists who can boost our economy. Domestic tourists have not been celebrated of late, that is why I put it into song,” said Fungisai.

There is also a song which talks about HIV and Aids.
“The song is based on the UNAids theme  “Zero new HIV infections, zero discrimination, zero Aids-related deaths.

“It urges Zimbabweans to believe that as a nation we can do it and have an HIV-free generation,” she said

She also features Blessing Shumba on the song “Ndinotendeuka Ndiregerewo”.
Fungisai has captured the national consciousness since bursting onto the scene as a 19-year-old gospel novice under the wing of veteran singer Elias Musakwa.

She has not looked back and “Wenyasha Ndewenyasha” is her ninth album in a career that spans more than a decade.
