THE Footballers Union of Zimbabwe (Fuz) has registered a housing trust to assist its members build homes, a senior official has said. Fuz secretary-general Paul Gundani said the union is in the process of approaching local authorities to avail land for the union to ease housing problems for its members. “After the realisation that some players become destitute when they retire from active football with nothing to show for it, the Football Union of Zimbabwe has formed a trust to which players and former players contribute towards purchasing of stands.
“So far we have approached the City of Harare and as a union we are happy that the response has been positive. We hope that by the end of the year, the council would have availed land for servicing before we avail stands to players to build their own houses,” he said.
Gundani said the scheme is also open to football coaches, administrators, journalists and athletes from other sporting disciplines.
The Fuz secretary-general said the scheme is expected to be launched in other towns by mid next year.
The move by the players’ body comes in the wake of players who have fallen on hard times after hanging their boots.
