ENGLAND based Warriors player Brendan Galloway is feeling on top of the world after he was selected into the senior national team squad that is going to take part in the Four Nations invitational tournament in Malawi.
The Warriors were invited to take part in the Four Nations tournament that will also feature hosts Malawi, Zambia and Kenya. The games, to be held this weekend, will be used as part of preparations for the resumption of 2026 World Cup qualifiers in June. In England, Galloway, who left the country as a six-year-old, does duty for Plymouth Argyle.
“It is nice to be around the boys again, nice to be with Warriors family and we are looking forward to the games. We welcome the friendly matches, we also welcome the new faces. I haven’t been here for a few years but I was welcomed back with pleasure so we can always gel together, help each other. The most important thing is to see the experienced ones help out the young ones. I came out here to do my best. It’s always an honour to represent the national team and hopefully, I will play well and it’s all the best to the team,” said Galloway.
Galloway was born in Harare, but moved to England with his family at the age of six, and went on to represent his adopted country at all age groups up to and including Under-21. Now he has transferred his international allegiance to Zimbabwe and the 28-year-old is happy for another for a return to Africa.
He first featured for the Warriors in 2021 for the 2022 World Cup qualifiers when the country’s flagship football side took on South Africa at the National Sports Stadium and then went on to take on Ethiopia in Bahir Dar.
“This is my country of birth, all my family are very proud Zimbabweans. It is a great opportunity and one that I am very thankful for as well. Hopefully, we can win our games and qualify for the World Cup. That’s the aim and it is the start of something great,” he said.
He is part of Norman Mapeza’s squad that also has Tinotenda Kadewere, Marshall Munetsi, Jordan Zemura, Tivonge Rushesha, Macauley Bonne, Shane Maroodza, Brendan Galloway, Divine Lunga, Tawanda Maswanhise and Munashe Garananga.
Other players that are in camp are Emmanuel Jalai, Kevin Moyo, Junior Makunike, Martin Mapisa, Peter Muduhwa, Donovan Bernard Walter Musona Teenage Hadebe, Joey Phuthi, Gerald Takwara and Daniel Msendami.
Dynamos defender Jalai received their first senior national call-ups after some breathtaking consistent performances at their respective clubs. In Botswana, Msendami, a former Highlanders player, does duty for Jwaneng Galaxy.
The trio was called into camp together with the British Brigade as the Warriors technical team thought of casting the net wider calling in little known Maroodza, Marley Tavaziva, and Tawanda Chirewa, among others.
However, Chirewa withdrew from the squad due to personal reasons. Captain Marvelous Nakamba misses out due to injury.
Meanwhile, bruised Young Warriors are on Friday set to take on Kenya at Lilongwe’s Silver Stadium.
The country’s Under 20 side is taking part in a similar contest that saw them go down to hosts Malawi 3-2 in a match that was played on Wednesday afternoon at the same venue. Greenfuel’s Denzel Mapuwa grabbed a brace for the Young Warriors.
