PEOPLE have multiple genres of music in their homes and artistes should produce albums that satisfy the varied tastes of their audiences, says artiste Mandla Gama.
Speaking after the launch of his third album, I won’t sleep with you tonight at Groove Nightclub on Wednesday night, he said he wanted to introduce a multi-genre album to cater for everyone’s taste.
“At home people do not have a distinct genre of music, but they have country, rock, and pop, hip hop jazz and so on. So I decided to do the same by bringing back pop and rock that was big in the 80s and early 90s,” he said.
During the show, Gama belted his tunes which had the mature at heart. He also introduced a new dance called the Fish and Cut, much to the amusement of the sizable crowd.
His album is a mixture of rock, Euro and Afro pop that he recorded with two groups, Men at Work and One Step Ahead.
Gama said his eight-track album title was inspired by the problems that couples face.
“What inspired my album title was that I have heard a lot of problems people face in marriages with spouses receiving phone calls on their cellphones at odd hours. The other partner would want to know what is going on and clarify. So the song is all about that,” said Gama.
“I recorded the album in Plumtree there is a studio there and it took me one year to do so. I composed all the songs.”
Gama said the next port of call was to launch the album in Harare. Gama has two other albums, Ufuna sizwe ngawe (2008) and Groovy Town (2011).
Quizzed on why there was a three year gap between his albums, he said it was because the albums were being given ample time to be promoted.
“As a musician, you should not rush to produce.
“Each album should be given time so that people enjoy it and become familiar with it,” he said.
