Gama releases seven-track album

Mandla Gama, an up-and-coming artist who left the United Kingdom last year has landed home with a bang in the music industry.

He is the brainchild of a blend of English, Ndebele and Shona tracks that he decided to render to the public as his Christmas gift for this year.

In 2008 he released his debut offer called Ufuna sizwe ngawe which, however, failed to make an impact due to poor marketing and economic malaise which bedevilled the country then.

He never was deterred from the music industry because of the failure of his first album and he seems to be on the path of realising his dream of becoming one of the future’s revered Afro-pop artists from Bulawayo. He has resurfaced with a new offer in the music arena.

“I released this album at the end of September this year with Gramma records and last weekend I shot a video of the album’s title Groovy Town around the township of Mzilikazi and Barbourfields.

“I am planning to take the video of this track to Zimbabwe Television for airplay and it is my hope that it will be nominated as the best video in next year’s National Merit Awards (NAMA),” said the visibly enthusiastic Gama.

The track Groovy Town talks about a Zimbabwean based in the Diaspora who arrived in the country and got the shock of his life when he realised how life had changed back home, with every individual looking cheery and in the mood of grooving.

“The song Groovy Town sends a message to Diasporans all over the world that life in Zimbabwe is more wonderful than where they are. Hence it urges them to come back and build the future of the country together,” added Gama.

Other tracks on the album include songs like Sithandwa sami, Thank you baby, Awuthengitshwala, Gumbura moyo, Awunamari and Zimbabwe.

He recently bought new instruments which he believes, will enable him to fully exhibit his talent and originality in music especially when staging live performances.

Gama and his band, One Step Ahead, has staged shows at Horizon, Cape to Cairo and Jabula Inn in Esigodini.
