Games galore set for PE

PRINCE Edward School will be a hive of activity when they host several sporting disciplines to be supported by Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints next week.
The different sporting events are scheduled to run from August 14 to 17 with 700 athletes from the age of 12 to 18 taking part. The event, which started in 2008, is aimed at helping develop talented and underprivileged young athletes in such disciplines like netball, basketball, athletics, football and rugby. An inaugural table tennis workshop has also been lined up.

The organisers have invited a number of national teams from different sporting disciplines which includes the Mighty Warriors,  who will come and inspire the young talents, and some of the country’s top coaches who will hold training sessions.

The participants will be camping at Prince Edward were they will get a chance of attending workshops where they will be learning new ideas. Rachel Nield and Hilary Mazura are the co-ordinators for the event.

The camp assistant Sharon Spencer said they are happy to host the event, which they believe will benefit a number of talented boys and girls.
“We are so happy and we enjoy seeing development. There is a lot to learn at the event. We enjoy seeing many young athletes as they get to know that they are heroes. Zimbabwe has a lot of talent and all they need is the opportunity and exposure,” Spencer.

The event will also give the young players an opportunity to learn on how to live a clean life, having self-confidence and issues related to sexual abuse. The organisers also added that they get volunteers each year who come to assist in developing the talented through their programmes.

Nield said their goal is to help the young athletes in identifying their talents.
“This is our third time to host this event.

“We are very happy and looking forward to it. When it started in 2008 our goal was to focus and develop young girls but we thought it was good to have the boys participating as well.

“The idea of this event is that it does not matter where it started but where it is going to take their talents. We want the participants to feel how important they are to this event and so we are going to provide the best sports and education at the event,” said Nield.
