A Bulawayo man is lucky to be alive after five men assaulted him with an iron bar and open hands before robbing him.
Mr Farai Mazvidzwa (36) of Luveve suburb, an employee at SOS Children’s village in Bulawayo was attacked as he pushed his car after it ran out of fuel along the Luveve-City road.
He regained conscious when his attackers had left the scene.
Police have arrested one of the suspects, Mpumelelo Masuku of Cowdray Park suburb.
Masuku, a vendor, appeared before Western Commonage Mr Stephen Ndhlovu charged with robbery.
He denied the charges and Mr Ndhlovu remanded him in custody to January 6 for trial.
Police, the court heard, recovered some of Mr Mazvidzwa’s property in Masuku’s possession.
Prosecuting, Ms Sibekithemba Dube said the gang attacked Mr Mazvidzwa as he pushed his car along the Luveve-City road in October this year.
“On October 29 this year at around 10PM, the complainant was driving towards town along Luveve road. His car ran out of fuel and he tried to push it to a nearby service station,” said Ms Dube.
Mr Mazvidzwa was with his brother Kudakwashe who ran away when the gang pounced.
“The accused person and his four accomplices who are still at large pounced on the unsuspecting complainant and robbed him of his GTel cellphone, car radio, $20 cash and a wallet containing a driver’s licence, identity particulars and bank cards,” said Ms Dube.
The gang assaulted Mr Mazvidzwa with open hands and an iron bar.
Masuku and his gang members allegedly fled after the attack.
The value of stolen property is $430 and only $160 was recovered.
