adminNew Delhi — A Bangladeshi man believed to be one of the leaders of a gang accused of raping a nun has been arrested, police said yesterday. Two more suspects are still on the run after the crime that sparked outage in India. The nun, in her seventies, was attacked at the Jesus and Mary convent school in the eastern state of West Bengal in March.
Nazrul Haque, aged 28, was arrested in a railway station in state capital Kolkata late on Wednesday evening, senior investigator Chittaranjan Nag said.
Nag said Haque was one of the “leaders” of the gang who attacked the school and church in Ranaghat. The nun was assaulted before the gang fled with cash and valuables. Nag said the accused was on the run after he was chased by the police from the border areas of Bangladesh where he was hiding after the crime.
“We believe he was trying to flee somewhere, he had sneaked across the porous border to get into India,” Nag told dpa. – AP
