THERE was mayhem at Cowdray Park Secondary School when five rowdy boys, dressed in school uniforms, launched a stone attack on a classroom, smashing ten window panes and sending terrified learners and a teacher scrambling for safety.
The gang had allegedly been chasing two boys after a dispute turned ugly. Outpaced and outwitted, the furious boys reportedly turned their rage on the building.
A source at the school, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said:
“While a teacher was in his office marking books, two boys —students, rushed in and told him they were being chased by five boys, who were throwing stones at them. The teacher went to check and found a trail of destruction. Ten window panes were smashed. Fortunately, learners and the teacher escaped unhurt and scurried for cover.”
Another witness said the violent teens hung around the school even after the attack, stones still in hand.
“They were still milling around, armed with rocks. The teacher gave chase. They scattered in different directions and he managed to catch one of them. He took the boy to the police station where the matter was reported,” said the source.
Bulawayo deputy police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Thandekile Ndlovu confirmed the incident.
“I would like to confirm that we arrested a boy, who was part of the gangsters who stoned classroom windows after they were involved in an argument with two other boys. Learners must not take the law into their own hands. Those who engage in violence will be arrested.”
The same group is reportedly infamous for bullying and terrorising other pupils.
“They beat students, accusing them of snatching their girlfriends. They also take drugs. Their behaviour is toxic and a bad influence on other children in the suburb,” said a concerned parent, Mr Moyo.
