LONDON. – From the moment Alejandro Garnacho scored his overhead kick for Manchester United against Everton, it was clear it was very special. It was the type of goal.
There was an immediate comparison to the overhead kick Wayne Rooney scored for Manchester United against Manchester City a decade ago.
And while that was the winner in a derby, Garnacho’s may have been technically better.
One man hoping Garnacho’s goal will be widely accepted as superior to Rooney’s is Micah Richards, who has been unable to escape it since 2011.
Former Manchester City defender Micah Richards was the closest opponent to Rooney on the pitch when he saw him winding up to attempt his overhead kick.
He said: “It’s been so long, I work for Sky now, basically they were running that advert with Rooney’s unbelievable strike for years.
“I’m hoping now that Garnacho scores this, they can change the advert. I’m starting a petition.”
He added: “The Garnacho one, it looked like it was all technique off his boot and it was just better.” – Agencies
