Gateway host fundraising tourney

Park Golf Club at the weekend to source money for their teams’ scheduled tour of South Africa.
The golf day was aimed at rai-sing funds for the boys’ rugby and girls’ hockey teams to tour Durban early next month.
The tour will see the rugby team taking part in the Northland Rugby Festival while the hockey team takes part in five matches against schools from around the town.
The school’s two teams will be travelling to South Africa for the fourth time having toured that country in 2004, 2007 and 2009.
In 2004 and 2007, the school’s teams went to Cape Town and from 2009 they have been touring Durban.
Hulley Gus, the senior sports director at Gateway, is positive that the tour will give their pupils good exposure and competition at advanced stages.
“We have started training for the events and we look forward to a good outing this time.
“Our best performance was in 2004 when the rugby team managed to win five of the six events that we took part in.
“Our rugby team is promising considering that we used to play teams with older players. The Under-13 were more of 14-year-olds but this time we have made up on that one.
“We expect to play teams of similar ages and now going to Durban will see a change in events.
“For the rugby team, we have a strong backline and the hockey team is still preparing.”
Gateway was not taking part in the local events as the season has not started and they are using this tour as preparations for the new season next term.
Gus, who is also the hockey coach at the school, added that they have confirmed their participation and now await the departure for the tour.
“The fundraising committee is running around and I think all will be in order as we call on corporates to join in.
“This may be a once-in-a-lifetime chance for some of the children and we need them to go and fully participate there,” said Gus.
