Supersport United coach, Gavin Hunt, has commended developmental coach Clemence Mabidi for organising anti-drug tournaments which will take place in his hometown, Mvuma, from December 22 to 24.

Mabidi has realised the need to kick out drug abuse in Mvuma by introducing a soccer  tournament which will run under the theme SAY NO TO DRUGS.

Girls will also take part in an eight-team netball tournament at the same event, which is being sponsored by Mabidi.

At least 12 teams are going to battle for the biggest prize in the boys’ competition.

Mabidi is based in South Africa, where he owns Messina United.

Hunt also expressed his desire to grace this event.

“I really appreciate this initiative; drug abuse is emerging as a serious problem everywhere. Young boys are struggling to fight this disease.

“It’s important to have people like Mabidi in our communities; they are doing an unbelievable job to get these boys to play football.

“I hope these children will accept this chance with both hands, and if my schedule is clear, it’s also my wish to come and support this event,” said Hunt.

Former Highlanders and Ngezi Platinum Stars coach Elroy Akby, Japhet Muparutsa, and Thabo Munyalo also shared the same sentiments.

Akby also emphasized the significance of workshops to equip the youngsters with the risks associated with drugs.

Mabidi is also getting financial support from his brother Tinashe.

He said the rise of drug abuse in Mvuma inspired him to come up with this idea.

“It’s sad that we are losing promising talent every day because of different types of drugs.

“As concerned citizens, it’s high time we start helping these youngsters by coming up with different ideas to keep them busy.

“It’s never too late, and if we can come together, we can win this battle,” said Mabidi.
