EXCITEMENT is building as Afro-fusion artist Gemma Griffiths prepares to make her debut performance at this year’s Zimbabwe Independence Day celebrations in Edmonton, Canada on April 19.

“This is a moment I have long dreamed of and I can’t wait to share it with everyone as this marks my very first show in Canada. Over the years, I’ve received countless messages from Zimbabweans living across this region, so to finally bring my music here truly means the world,” Gemma said.

Other artists lined up to perform include; Nashie Zim, Nkwali, Micyunging, MC. Amanda Nothando, and the ever-smiling Sadza Neguru.

The event provides an opportunity to highlight the importance of cultural preservation in the diaspora.

It will also serve as a day to honour and educate others about Zimbabwean history, culture, and traditions, fostering a sense of pride and identity among Zimbabwean-Canadian youth.

“I’m deeply aware of the significance of this date and I don’t take it lightly. I feel incredibly lucky to call Zimbabwe home. It’s a place that’s shaped my heart, my music, and my sense of belonging. I’m grateful to share in the joy, the spirit, and the stories that make Zimbabwe so special,” she said.

As one of Zimbabwe’s most celebrated contemporary artists with a unique blend of Afro-pop, soul, and traditional Zimbabwean sounds, Gemma has promised fans a taste of new songs off her upcoming album set for release on May 23 this year.

“I will surprise my fans with new music off my coming album titled ‘GEMMA’ plus a feel of the singles I’ve released this year already namely – ‘Mhaka’, ‘Alone’, and ‘Ndarema’.

Event organisers Fambocide Entertainment through Washington (DJ Fambo) Ruzvidzo called people to come in their large numbers as we have incorporated musician Nkwali, to bring a fusion of traditional and cultural music that resonates with the elderly and teaches children their cultural roots through music.”

By showcasing traditional music, dance, food, and storytelling, these celebrations help preserve heritage, strengthen community bonds, and promote multicultural understanding in Canada.

To keep people on their feet, top Zim DJs based in Canada will be on the decks.

These include Dj Fantafire, Vinnyonone, and Dj Winters Majesty.
