ZIMBABWE Netball Association (ZINA) are satisfied with their teams’ progress, following impressive victories against Kenya during the on-going 4-day Test Series in Harare.

The series which commenced on Wednesday features the senior national team – the Gems, their development side — Zambezi Eagles, against visiting Kenya senior team, the Divas.

On the opening day of the Test, the Zambezi Eagles narrowly lost to Kenya in an exhilarating match which ended 45-49 at Queen Elizabeth High School.

The following day, the Gems opened their Test campaign on a high, overwhelming the visitors 54-28.

This was before a determined Zambezi Eagles, yesterday wrapped up their Test appearance with a 41-39 victory over the East Africans.

ZINA technical director John Banda feels the wins are an indicator of strides being made in the growth of the game.

“Such performances also highlight the potential for growth and improvement within Zimbabwean netball and that leaves us thoroughly impressed.

“Our aim is to have a vibrant and consistent feeder channel into the senior team, this is how the Zambezi Eagles concept came about and we are glad it’s working.”

Banda said the series also provides valuable experience for all the teams, allowing them to refine their skills and strategies in a competitive environment.

This afternoon, the Gems will once again face off with the Divas in the final match of the Test at 3pm at Queen Elizabeth.

Players will be out to impress coach Ropafadzo Mutsauki ahead of more international assignments later in the year.

Zimbabwe are expected to make a second appearance at the Celtic Cup in Scotland in November before once again meeting Kenya at the African Championships in Malawi, in December.

Both sides are hoping to qualify for the 2027 Netball World Cup scheduled for Australia with the ongoing Test providing a crucial build-up platform for them.

“We applaud the association for organising such friendlies for us, especially as we aim for a third successive World Cup appearance,” said Mutsauki.

“Such platforms provide us with a competitive platform which can help us elevate the standard of our game.

“I am impressed with our teams, they surpassed our expectations and this is a sign which shows that we are in the right direction.”

Mutsauki wants his side to end the Series on a high.

“In our final Test match, we are eyeing another statement victory and I am confident that the girls can deliver.

“We are rotating all our players to ensure that everyone gets enough game time to prove themselves.

“Of the seniors, especially those who played at the 2019 World Cup we only have two or three remaining so we are integrating ‘rookies’ into the team.

“The ‘rookies’ need as much exposure as possible hence this makes all these international friendlies key,’’ he said.

“Generally, both teams have done well so far and we are almost certain that we are headed for good times on the international stage.”
