LOVE by DESIGN

THE journey of finding love is often marked by moments of uncertainty. After the decision to be saved, choosing a life partner is the next most important decision of your life.

It must be made carefully and prayerfully.

Singles everywhere wrestle with questions that echo deep within the heart: Is she the one? Does he tick all the boxes? Am I ready to commit? Such questions are not trivial – they reflect the weight of choosing a partner who will shape the course of one’s life. Yet, in the midst of this search, there is a timeless truth: love is not merely about ticking boxes, but about aligning with God’s will.

Illusion of perfection

In today’s world, singles are bombarded with ideals of the ‘perfect partner.’ Social media, movies, and even well‑meaning friends often paint a picture of flawless romance. But we have often said perfection is an illusion. Life has a way of testing our focus, and if we are not careful, we can lose a good thing over temporary distractions. A person may appear dazzling on the surface, yet lack the depth of character needed for a lasting relationship or for your God given assignment. Conversely, someone who seems ordinary at first glance may carry the very qualities that make for a God‑ordained union.

The danger lies in chasing illusions — choosing based on fleeting attraction or societal pressure rather than prayerful discernment. The Bible reminds us in Proverbs 31:30: “Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.” The same applies to men. What endures is not charm or appearance, but godly character. Where you are going determines the partner you need.

Be still

In the search for love, impatience can be a silent enemy. Many singles feel the pressure of time, family expectations, or loneliness, and rush into relationships that are not aligned with God’s plan. Yet Scripture calls us to a different posture: “Be still, and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10). Being still does not mean inactivity of course, it means trusting God’s timing and refusing to let anxiety dictate our choices.

Stillness allows clarity. When we pause, pray, and wait, we give God space to reveal His will. The right partner may not appear immediately, but waiting in faith is better than settling in haste. As Isaiah 40:31 makes a great promise for they that wait upon the Lord.

Praying for His Will, not your own

Prayer is the compass in the search for love. Too often, singles pray for what they see physically only-specific traits, appearances, or circumstances — without asking if those desires align with God’s plan. Yet true prayer seeks His will above our own. Jesus Himself modelled this in Gethsemane: “Not my will, but Yours be done” (Luke 22:42).

Praying for God’s will in relationships is an act of surrender. It acknowledges that He sees beyond what we can see. He knows the hidden struggles, the future challenges, and the unseen blessings. When we pray for His will, we invite Him to enable a union that is not only fulfilling but enduring.

Thoughts on dating versus courtship

In the swirl of modern romance, many singles find themselves faced with multiple dating options. The confusion is real: Should I keep exploring? Is this person serious? How do I know if this is leading anywhere? To navigate these questions, it helps to understand the difference between dating and courtship, especially from a Christian standpoint.

Dating, in its common form today, often emphasises companionship, fun, and exploration. It is platonic, casual, with little long‑term intention, and sometimes focuses more on chemistry than commitment. While dating can help people learn about themselves and others, it carries risks if not guided by faith. Casual dating may lead to emotional entanglements, physical temptation, or wasted time with someone who does not share your values.

For Christians, dating should not be detached from purpose in my view. It must be approached with prayer, boundaries, and discernment. The goal is not simply to “try people out,” but to evaluate whether a relationship honours God and has potential for marriage.

Courtship, by contrast, is intentional. It is not about testing waters but about prayerfully discerning marriage. In courtship, both individuals enter the relationship with clarity: the purpose is to see if God is leading them toward a lifelong covenant. Families, mentors, or spiritual leaders may be involved, offering guidance and accountability. Courtship emphasises purity, respect, and alignment with biblical principles.

The difference lies in focus. Dating often asks, “Do I enjoy this person right now?” Courtship asks, “Can I build a God‑honouring future with this person?” One is temporary exploration; the other is purposeful preparation. And in all of this you cannot run away from discipline. Your body is the temple of the living God. Do things the right way.

Why the distinction matters

Understanding this difference helps singles avoid confusion when faced with multiple options. If someone is only interested in casual dating, yet you desire marriage, clarity will save you heartache. If someone is open to courtship, you know their intentions align with yours. As Amos 3:3 reminds us: “Can two walk together, unless they are agreed?” Agreement in purpose is essential. Choose someone who complements your personality.

Encouragement

Singles, do not be overwhelmed by the options before you. Remember: God is not the author of confusion. Whether through dating or courtship, His desire is to lead you into a relationship that glorifies Him and blesses you.

Your God‑ordained partner is out there, also praying, waiting, and trusting. May your paths meet quickly, in Jesus’ name. And if you need pointers along the way, write in – I would be more than glad to walk this journey with you.
