Geo Pomona Waste Management Company has collected a total of 76 830 tonnes of waste in Harare in the last three months as part of its ongoing illegal dumpsite clearance initiative in the capital.

The waste has been removed in 6 380 loads.

This comes as the company prepares to launch a city-wide door-to-door refuse collection service.

Illegal dumpsites have already been cleared in several suburbs, including Warren Park, Kambuzuma, Highfield, Mbare and Kuwadzana, among others.

Commenting on the progress of the initiative recently, Geo Pomona Waste Management CEO Dr Dilesh Nguwaya said the company is in the final stages of planning before rolling out door-to-door waste collection.

“We are currently in a transitional period, finalising key logistics with the City of Harare,” said Dr Dilesh Nguwaya.

“During this transition, Geo Pomona is executing waste collection in a phased approach, starting with the clearing of illegal dumpsites across Harare.

“The City of Harare will continue with door-to-door waste collection for now until all key logistics are finalised.”

To expedite the next phase of the project, Geo Pomona is working closely with partners and equipment suppliers to ensure a smooth launch of door-to-door services.

Dr Nguwaya emphasised that the phased strategy is designed to first address the urgent issue of illegal dumping, followed by the implementation of a more organised waste management system.

“Our phased approach prioritises the removal of illegal dumpsites, after which we will implement a structured and efficient waste collection system,” he said.

“We continue to work closely with key stakeholders to ensure the success of this initiative and to drive long-term improvements in waste management across Harare.”
