Harare Magistrate Sheunesu Matova has postponed to May 8 the trial of 98 individuals accused of participating in a failed demonstration last month.

The group faces charges of taking part in a public gathering with the intent to incite violence.

The State, led by Prosecutor Anesu Chirenje, alleges that the accused gathered at Robert Mugabe Square around 9:20 am on March 31 as part of a wider plan to disrupt public order.

During the protest, participants reportedly chanted slogans, threw stones at police officers and attempted to block roads using bricks and burning tyres.

Authorities claim that some protesters recorded videos and took photographs during the demonstration, which were later circulated on social media in an effort to stir further unrest.

Of the 98 suspects, 94 were arrested at the scene, while one individual was later apprehended at his residence after being identified in the shared footage.
