Geo Pomona commences skip bins distribution

GEO Pomona Waste Management has commenced the distribution of skip bins across high-traffic areas in Harare, including bus terminuses, markets and densely-populated public spaces.

This follows the waste management firm’s recent resumption of waste collection services across Harare.

The launch of the skip bin deployment was held at Charge Office Bus Terminus in Harare yesterday, with Geo Pomona Waste Management chief executive officer and executive chairman Dr Dilesh Nguwaya reiterating the company’s commitment to sustainable waste management.

“This initiative is a direct response to the visible need for structured waste collection in high-traffic areas. We are not just placing bins, we are building a culture of environmental responsibility,” he said.

Dr Nguwaya said by deploying skip bins, the firm was spearheading efforts to reduce illegal dumping activities across the capital city, particularly the Central Business District.

This, he said, was pursuant to Harare’s goal of retaining its Sunshine City status.

“Through this rollout, we aim to reduce illegal dumping, improve hygiene, and help the City of Harare regain its clean image.

“Our goal is to support Zimbabwe’s Vision 2030 by aligning our actions with the NDS1 pillar on environmental protection and waste recovery.”

Commuters and vendors operating near the Charge Office Bus Terminus commended Geo Pomona for the latest initiative.

“This bin is a blessing.

“We used to pile rubbish near our stalls, and it would rot there for days. Now, we have a proper place to throw our waste,” said Tariro Moyo a commuter.

Blessing Chikowore, a commuter omnibus driver at the bus terminus said the availing of the skip bins was a welcome development.

“Customers used to complain about the smell. With this new system, business will be better,” he said.

Tendai Zinyama, a vendor and long-time resident of Mbare said Harare would be a totally clean city soon if the rolling out of such initiatives is continued.

“We need more bins in other areas too. If everyone does their part, Harare can be clean again,” said Zinyama.

Geo Pomona confirmed that the skip bin programme would be scaled up over the coming weeks to cover other key locations across the city of Harare.
