Geographical edge positions Byo for Starlink ground station

Jacqueline Ntaka, Analysis

FOLLOWING last week’s discussion on Zimbabwe as a prime location for a Starlink ground station, we now focus on why Bulawayo is the most suitable city to host it. Although other cities could be considered, Bulawayo offers the best combination of geographical benefits, existing facilities, and its role in the economy and society, making it the clear central point for Starlink’s operations across the country.

Firstly, Bulawayo’s geographical positioning offers significant benefits. Situated in the south-western part of Zimbabwe, it provides excellent coverage for a substantial portion of the country. Its relatively flat terrain, compared to some of the more mountainous regions, simplifies the process of site acquisition and construction for the ground station.

Furthermore, its inland location mitigates potential risks associated with coastal weather patterns, ensuring greater operational stability for the sensitive equipment. Being a major urban centre, Bulawayo also benefits from relatively lower levels of dense foliage compared to more rural areas, which can sometimes interfere with signal transmission between the satellite constellation and the ground station.

Secondly, Bulawayo boasts existing infrastructure that can significantly streamline the deployment and operation of a Starlink ground station. As Zimbabwe’s second-largest city, it possesses a well-established power grid, crucial for the continuous and reliable operation of the station’s power-hungry equipment. The presence of established telecommunications infrastructure, including fibre optic networks, can facilitate the efficient backhauling of data from the ground station to the wider internet backbone.

Moreover, Bulawayo is a major transportation hub with good road and rail links, simplifying the logistics of transporting equipment and personnel during the construction and maintenance phases. The proximity to educational institutions and a skilled workforce also offers a potential pool of talent for the long-term operation and support of the facility.

Beyond the technical and logistical advantages, Bulawayo also presents compelling socio-economic factors. Establishing a significant technological installation like a Starlink ground station can act as a catalyst for economic growth in the region. It can create skilled jobs in installation, maintenance, and related support services.

Furthermore, improved internet connectivity facilitated by a local ground station can empower businesses, educational institutions, and individuals in Bulawayo and the surrounding areas, fostering innovation and access to global opportunities. Positioning the ground station in a major population centre also ensures that the benefits of improved connectivity are readily accessible to a large segment of the population.

Finally, Bulawayo’s historical significance as a major centre in Zimbabwe underscores its strategic importance.

It is a city with a strong industrial and commercial base, and enhancing its digital infrastructure through a Starlink ground station aligns with the national agenda of promoting technological advancement and economic development. The presence of government and regulatory bodies in the city can also facilitate smoother co-ordination and approvals for the project.
