WARRIORS goalkeeper, George Chigova, believes he is reaping the rewards of his patience.
The SuperSport United goalie endured two forgettable seasons as back-up for Bafana Bafana captain Ronwen Williams.
However, the departure of Williams to crosstown rivals Mamelodi Sundowns, earlier this season, appears to have opened the door for Chigova.
Matsantsantsa have now played six matches in the South African top-flight league and it might be too early to conclude the giant goalkeeper has earned the trust of his coach, Gavin Hunt.
But, the reality is that Chigova has done well to force his name back into the limelight.
He was at his best when they downed Mamelodi Sundowns 2-1 last week.
The former Polokwane City man pulled off some brilliant saves to deny the visitors.
Chigova will be tested again on Friday when they travel to Maritzburg United.
The 30-year-old stated that Williams’ superiority never dented his self-esteem.
“I didn’t play many games for the club, especially when Ronwen was here, but that didn’t demoralise me because I know in football it’s hard to change a goalkeeper when he’s doing as well as Ronwen was doing,” said Chigova.
“I kept on working hard, and now I’m playing and my patience has paid off.
“I have been putting in some hard work since I returned in 2020 from Polokwane City.
“I would always train like I was going to play.
“That was my secret and I’m old enough to understand how football works.
“There was no need for me to sulk when Ronwen was playing because it was his chance and he was utilising it.”
