Gerald Sibanda’s big break: Help a rising star reach Texas College

FOR young footballers in Bulawayo, the dream of a professional career starts on the streets. For 22-year-old goalkeeper Gerald Sibanda, that dream is within reach. A former Zimbabwe Under-17 player and current star for Zebra Revolution, his talent has earned him a place at Texas College in the USA to play football and study.

This life-changing opportunity was secured after his impressive performance at last year’s Vision2Africa trials.

Despite this success, a major financial hurdle remains. The scholarship is only partially funded, and Sibanda needs to raise over US5 000 to cover the remaining costs. The college has committed a portion of the total US$9 108 bill, leaving the rest to be raised to turn this promising young talent’s dream into a reality.

“He got a sponsorship to go to the US, and he’s always been disciplined, even academically. From primary school through to university, he’s done well. This scholarship means a lot to the family — it came at a time when we really needed a breakthrough.

“At this point, we’ve managed to reach the visa application stage. Now we need funds for the visa, the agent’s fee of around US$2 000, the remaining US$3 000 for tuition, and approximately US$800 for the flight. This is what we need to make his dream come true,” said his father, Ndodana Sibanda.

Ndodana emphasised that this is not just a personal milestone for Gerald, but a proud moment for everyone who has supported his journey — from coaches to teammates and family members.

“When one person succeeds in a family, the whole family succeeds. And when these boys go overseas, they raise the flag for the nation and the clubs they’ve represented.”

Gerald, known for his discipline and talent, has always had the unwavering support of his parents. From junior development structures to Division One football, he has remained focused on his goals.

“As a young athlete, I’ve always dreamt of pursuing my passion for football while furthering my education. Texas College offers both — a strong academic programme and a competitive football team that aligns with my ambitions,” said Gerald.

He’s not asking for the world — just a bridge to reach it. Every contribution brings him closer to the goalpost of his life.
