Gerrard snubbed Chelsea

LONDON. – Steven Gerrard claims he couldn’t join Chelsea, because of his hometown connection with Liverpool. Jose Mourinho was an admirer of Gerrard during his first spell at Stamford Bridge.

Gerrard, who just signed for MLS outfit LA Galaxy, received a number of overtures during his time at Anfield.

But he claims the honours he won at LiverpooL were worth more than the success he could have had, had he joined Chelsea.

“I love the manager, I love the man, I’ve had a distant relationship with him for many years but, I have regrets for not playing for the man and the coach because I know he would have made me a better player,” Gerrard said in an interview with BT Sport.

“I know he would have had more trophies to what I’ve already won. But looking back now I have no regrets not signing for Chelsea. I don’t regret it at all.

“I’m happy with the decisions I made. The connection I’ve got with Liverpool, my home town club. I’ve probably underachieved at times in certain years with Liverpool but for me it is not all about winning trophies.

“It’s also about memories and love and what those memories meant. Winning four or five trophies with Liverpool means an awful lot more than winning 10 or 11 with Chelsea.”

Gerrard also said he knew it was time to leave Liverpool when he was omitted from the starting line-up for their Champions League group match at Real Madrid last November.

The 35-year-old former England captain left Anfield in May after more than 17 years and 700 matches with the Premier League club and has signed for Major League Soccer club LA Galaxy.

He said he was “devastated” when manager Brendan Rodgers put him on the bench in Madrid and realised his days at the club were numbered. – AFP.
