Gerrard to play in MLS

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard will move to the United States when he leaves Anfield at the end of the season, his club said on Twitter. Gerrard, 34, announced on Friday he would be leaving Liverpool, calling it “the toughest” decision of his life. There had been widespread speculation he would move to Major League Soccer (MLS), with LA Galaxy mooted as one potential destination.
Gerrard could join his former England team-mate Frank Lampard in MLS.

Lampard, 36, left Chelsea last year to join New York City FC, though he was loaned back to Manchester City, where he will stay until the end of this season.
Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has said the club should have made more of an effort to keep Gerrard.

“Steven is not someone who would be comfortable just sitting on the bench and, in that sense, he has made the right decision,” Carragher wrote in his column for the Daily Mail.

“Still, I cannot help feeling Liverpool’s hierarchy should have done more to ensure he remained at Anfield.”
Carragher said Gerrard should have been made to feel more “wanted” and been given a coaching role along with his playing responsibilities.

“Over the next 12 months Steven could have been given a role on the staff to combine with his playing duties,” the 36-year-old said.
“It would have been like work experience, with him shadowing Brendan Rodgers, looking at how the academy is run – all the different aspects of the club.
“At the end of the year, it might have been that Steven wasn’t at the right level to be a coach or he could have decided that coaching wasn’t for him.

“But I look at what is happening with Ryan Giggs at Manchester United now and I am dismayed that Liverpool are letting that experience leave.”
Rodgers said he had wanted Gerrard to stay and that the midfielder wanted to carry on playing and was not ready to move into coaching. — BBC Sport
