Still on the tips, South African students especially girls have welcomed the new law on natural hair as Parktown High School for Girls in Johannesburg altered its hair policy to allow its learners to attend class with ‘what they consider to be their natural hair’.
The school made the announcement recently amidst growing public debate on the hair policies of schools‚ after students at Pretoria High School for Girls protested over their school’s hair rules and alleged incidents of racism by staff members.
In a Facebook post‚ Parktown High School for Girls said that it was taking a proactive approach in dealing with racism.
“In acknowledging that racism is a complex problem‚ the staff has been engaging in workshops‚ facilitated by outsiders‚ about racism and diversity; the first of which happened last week.
This is an ongoing process and once we have better equipped the staff at the school to deal with the issues that arise we will have similar‚ facilitated workshops with some of our senior learners who can then facilitate discussions with other learners.
We are working hard to ensure that there is no subtle or structural racism at Parktown High School for Girls.
In light of this‚ we made the decision recently to amend our school’s hair policy making it possible for all girls to attend school feeling comfortable with what they consider to be their natural hair.”
Learners at Pretoria High School for Girls said the school had instructed black pupils to straighten their hair.
One student said that her afro had been described as a dirty bird’s nest.
After announcement of the school’s commitment to change its hair policy‚ a senior student said learners would submit a memorandum to the school’s governing body (SGB) to ensure they were represented in the policy-changing process.

The R‘n’B star remained locked in his Los Angeles home for four hours on Tuesday while police stood outside and news helicopters buzzed overhead, after a woman accused him of pointing a gun at her and making threats.
Brown, who has a history of brushes with the law, posted a series of videos online claiming he was being unjustly vilified while denouncing police as “the world gang in the world” and demanding that they return with a search warrant.
The singer did eventually allow the police inside, and was released on $250 000 bail.
He is scheduled to appear in court next month.
Baylee Curran, a former beauty queen, called police at approximately 3am on Tuesday morning after leaving Brown’s home.
She said she had been admiring diamond jewellery displayed by one of Brown’s friend when the artiste snapped.
Ms Curran said she was not sure what may have precipitated the alleged threats, but that Brown had kicked four women out of his home earlier in the night, and seemed to be agitated and “getting continuously sick of these girls”.
Ray J, a rapper and friend of Brown’s who was at his home during the alleged incident, said he was “real upset” about the accusations.
“I’m not happy with how things are handled and how people can take a false story and blow it up into something way more than what it should be,” he said in a post to Brown’s Instagram account.

So Harry Potter is back and set to hit our cinemas soon, but fans are begging for Daniel Radcliffe to reprise Harry Potter role in “Cursed Child” remake although Warner Bros dash hopes of a film.
Based on the hit “West End” play “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child”, the New York Daily News reported that the studio were interested in bringing a film version to the screen ‘as soon as 2020’ with Radcliffe back as the bespectacled wizard.
Unsurprisingly, the news created something of a stir among Potter fans.
Please please do this,’ tweeted Ben White directly to Warner Brothers, the studio behind all eight of the Potter movies.
“Oh my Gosh, please bring back the original cast,” added Twitter user Shay, while Paulina Colada added ‘I just gasped out loud.’
However, Warner Bros soon dashed their hopes, issuing a statement which read: “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child’ is a stage play, with no plans for there to be a film.”
“The Cursed Child” — a two part play — opened in the West End last month to rave reviews, and focuses on Harry Potter’s son Albus.
Older versions of the characters Hermione Granger, Ron Weasley and Potter all feature but are played by Noma Dumezweni, Paul Thornley and Jamie Parker in the show.
Since the end of Potter, Radcliffe has sought to distance himself from the role which made him famous, appearing in a series of independent and low budget films including 2014 fantasy horror film “Horns” and 2013 “Beat Generation movie Kill “Your Darlings”.
He recently told The Sun that he is uninterested in picking up Harry’s wand again, but did not rule out participating in an older version of the role in future.
Daniel first took on the role of Harry Potter aged 11.
