adminACCRA. — Ghana coach Kwesi Appiah named his World Cup soccer squad yesterday which should calm the intense debate in the country over who to pick. Kwesi named 26 players on his provisional list and still has to cut the number down to 23 players before the start of the tournament.Ghana-born Kwesi is the first African coach to take Ghana to the World Cup, joining a small group of African coaches to have managed on the biggest stage in world football.
He was Ghana’s assistant coach between 2007 and 2012 and says he has learned from the experience at the 2010 World Cup under predecessor Milovan Rajevac.
We all remember Ghana’s achievements in 2010, when only a Luis Suarez handball could stop them from reaching the semi-finals.
This is Ghana’s third World Cup appearance. In 2006 they were the only African side to advance to the second round and in 2010 they became only the third nation from Africa to qualify for the quarter-finals.
After beating Egypt 7-3 on aggregate, Ghana qualified for the 2014 World Cup and have been drawn in Group G with Germany, Portugal and the USA.
