Gifford, Dominican Convent defend Chess Open tourney titles

GIFFORD High School junior boys and Dominican Convent Harare successfully defended the Girls College Chess Open titles in Bulawayo at the weekend.Gifford scored 16,5 game points to win the junior boys’ category while Harare-based Dominican Convent scored 15 points in the senior girls category.

In the previous editions of the Girls College Chess Open both Gifford and Dominican Convent won in the seniors and juniors’ sections.
In the senior boys’ category, Prince Edward won with 15,5 game points only to surpass Gifford with a half a point as they came second with 15.

Mpopoma High School won the junior girls’ category after accumulating 16,5 game points being followed by Usher with 12,5 points.
Event organiser Moses Mutipforo said the tournament was a great success.

“We had a great tournament, it was better compared to last year and all our partners and sponsors graced the occasion and even the Sport and Recreation Commission.

“I was impressed that we had over 23 schools taking part in the event,” said Mutipforo.
