IN an act best described by the Biblical phrase ‘the sins of the fathers shall be visited upon the sons’, a Mutambara teenager has not been going to school for the past four months due to unrelenting torments from an avenging spirit that was once appeased.
The spirit is now demanding attention from its now born-again ‘children’.
The avenging spirit of a Mozambican national who was murdered in the 1960s by a Barara family member previously demanded its own family comprised of a husband, wife and a homestead at the Barara compound.
The demands were met years ago.
Now that the spirit’s given wife and husband are long dead, while its grown up children are born-again Christians that have relocated with their own families, the spirit is now turning the heat on the family’s minors.
The matter came to light during Acting Chief Saurombe’s court last week on Sunday as Christopher Shungu Barara revealed that the Mozambican national was murdered a long time ago by his great grandfather.
He said the avenging spirit demanded a wife who would bear him children through a selected husband.
“A wife was married, and a Barara acted as the husband in place of the murdered man. The couple was blessed with two sons who are now Christians and have relocated from here.
“The spirit is now attacking my 16-year-old son and he has since dropped out of school. He has failed to sit for his Form Four national examinations because of this. When the spirit manifests, it orders us to locate its children and restore his household,” he said.
Christopher said when the spirit manifests through the teenager, he turns violent on his classmates and teachers, resulting in everyone shunning him.
“I cannot take it anymore. I want my son back in school so that he realises his dreams,” said the distraught father.
The teenager’s mother, Sitshengisiwe Dube, said her son is living in agony as he wants to go back to school but is failing to do so as the spirit manifests the moment he enters the school gates.
“All I want is for my son to lead a normal life. He is suffering from both emotional and physical torture. He is now a loner as his friends have deserted him,” she said.
During the court session, the avenging spirit manifested through a spiritual healer, Mbuya Regina Tembi Muchinga, after she had prayed for the teenager.
The spirit said it was angered by its children’s decision to be born-again Christians.
“You people are joking. You think I will be scared of the clay pots that you use in your church? You have the guts to conduct your church services at my homestead. Because of that, I moved on and I have found a new medium in this boy,” charged the spirit.
It also claimed that one of the Bararas should be a headman in the area, but their failure to respect it will result in them failing to land the post.
“Ask them, they have royal blood in their veins, but they will never taste power as they are allowing my children to forsake me. They are throwing their weight around like big shots forgetting that I am the source of their wealth. I want my children back and when I leave this boy, I am going to be with my children even though they no longer want to come back to visit me, their father,” promised the spirit.
Acting Chief Saurombe had no kind words for the Barara family.
“This child has failed to sit for his examinations this year because you pushed this spirit on to him. The child has a right to live his own life and to education. Depriving him of both these rights is criminal. Once we establish the name of the person who cast the spirit on this boy, he will pay dearly for his sins,” said Acting Chief Saurombe.
The spirit, however, refused to name the person responsible.
“I will not say any names. All I can say is that I am now going to my children wherever they are in the city. Just stop conducting church services at my homestead,” said the spirit.
Acting Chief Saurombe said they will visit the teenager’s family on January 16, 2022, to monitor and evaluate his condition.
