UK-BASED Dynamos legend, Japhet “Shortcat” Mparutsa, was yesterday hailed for championing junior football development.
Dynamos Juniors’ executive chairman, Vincent Chawonza, showered Mparutsa with praise when they received a new kit for the juniors, at their National Sports Stadium offices.
The kit is made up of 52 tops, stockings and track bottoms.
“I would like to thank all the guys who have come up with this idea and, of course, in particular, Japhet Muparutsa, who is instrumental in all this. It will have a big impact on Zimbabwean junior football.
“It’s heart-warming to find out there are still people who are dedicating their time for junior football to be at its best,” said Chawonza.
He urged former players to take a leaf from Mparutsa, and friends, who still have the club at heart.
“This is the beginning of a new era, with quite a number of people coming up to support junior football, so, we thank them very much.
“Please keep doing that, you are changing someone’s life.
“A lot of our juniors are eyeing to go and play in the UK, and that will be a boost for them,” he added.
Speaking at the same event, Wellington Pombi, who handed over the kit, said they were inspired by Mparutsa’s drive.
“I will be back four times and will try to bring more kits for the boys.
“We will also try to bring some kits for the senior team.
“The other thing is we have made arrangements that one of the teams, either the senior or junior team, should go to the UK soon, after the season ends.
“Football legend Japhet Mparutsa has already made the arrangements for that to happen,” he said.
Pombi, who is employed as a health practitioner in the UK, flew back home to prepare the Welly P Foundation.
“It’s a Foundation that will be based in Gweru.
“It seeks to support local deprived children and will also focus on maternity issues, particularly women with pregnancy-related issues,” he added.
