A 10-year-old Glen Norah girl is capturing scores of hearts and sparking important conversations within her community with her powerful gospel songs.
Her song ‘Mari,’ where she is encouraging people to embrace hard work and reject the lure of black magic money, has captured the imagination of her community.
Tanyaradzwa Meki, better known as Malaika, recently performed her song at a local church.
Her stirring lyrics left the congregation in tears and earned her a standing ovation.
The song’s chorus, “True blessings come from toil and sweat, not shortcuts filled with regret,” urges listeners to remain steadfast in their faith and hard work, rather than succumbing to the temptation of rituals or schemes promising instant wealth.
In an interview, Malaika said:
“I have seen people in my community struggle with these choices.
“I want them to know that real blessings come from honest effort.
“We don’t need black magic, we need to trust God and work hard.”
Her message comes at a time when stories of people turning to “get-rich-quick” schemes, through rituals, have been making headlines.
Many fall victim to such practices and face dire consequences ranging from financial ruin to legal troubles.
Her mother, Rutendo Mawoyo, praised her daughter for her courage and wisdom.
“This child is an inspiration. Her words are a wake-up call for everyone.
“We must guide the next generation to value integrity and faith.
“Let’s value lives, ngatiregerei kuromba and let’s work hard to earn it,” she said.
She revealed that her daughter wrote the song after overhearing discussions about people in their neighborhood who had fallen for false promises of wealth.
“She told us she wanted to remind people that shortcuts lead to destruction.”
The song was recorded at Background Studios by Tawanda Kuimba, who also praised her talent and maturity.
“There is no doubt this song will win the hearts of many and can even be played at schools and youth gatherings as a way to instill values of diligence and faith in the younger generation.
“With her incredible talent, and heartfelt mission, Malaika is not only singing but also planting seeds of hope and morality that may shape the community for generations to come.”
